Now.gg launches mobile cloud game streaming platform for developers
Mobile cloud business Now.gg Today launched a game streaming capability as a platform-as-a-service for game developers to make it easy for gamers to run high-quality games on their less powerful smartphones without compromising performance.
The platform does this by running the compute and cloud storage and streaming the graphics across the internet on the phone – similar to options like Google Stadia and GeForce Now for the PC and console gaming markets – except Now .gg has no region or device boundaries.
“Now.gg allows mobile game developers to acquire a full spectrum of new users who would otherwise have been limited by device and app store specifications,” said Rosen Sharma, Managing Director of Now.gg. “The mobile cloud democratizes access to mobile games by removing all the friction and device requirements to experience a new game.”
By using the cloud to offload most of the heavy lifting, gamers with older devices can be added to the mobile audience and can still enjoy modern and upcoming games. According to a report From IDC, nearly 60% of smartphones in the global market are low to mid-range and cannot handle performance-hungry games.
Now.gg games can be shared instantly by clicking on a link and can be played immediately even in third-party apps like Discord and Snapchat without leaving the platform. Users simply click on the link and launch their game, without further waiting for a giant app to be downloaded and installed.
Game developers can also make it easy for users to spend money on their games with digital wallets, including points and cryptocurrencies. This means that players do not need to rely on credit cards for payments.
Now.gg’s servers are powered by nowCloud OS, a proprietary distributed Android stack on Arm-based servers. This operating system allows developers to activate their own existing Android apps for the cloud and create cloud-native games that can then be released to customers at scale, allowing Now.gg to scale to market. network characteristics on the fly according to the needs of the players.
“Now.gg has built a platform that leverages AWS’s global scale to provide a valuable business model for game developers around the world,” said Johan Broman, head of game solutions architects for the ‘Europe, Middle East and Africa at Amazon Web Services Inc. “We see this as one of the most interesting use cases for our Arm servers on Amazon EC2. By leveraging Now.gg’s mobile cloud and AWS Graviton2 instances, game developers can run mobile games natively, encode rendered graphics, and stream games directly to a mobile device.
Now.gg’s mobile cloud for developers is available today.
