Shock in Spain as Sergio Ramos withdraws from Spain’s Euro 2020 squad which was announced today
Spanish football fans are in shock today, Monday 24, after Luis Enrique announced his squad for the Euro 2020 tournament, and he dropped his captain – the most capped player in the country – Sergio Ramos, from his team, according to The sun.
Ramos had an injury-ridden season with Real Madrid, making just 21 appearances in all competitions for his club, but he had started in nine of his country’s ten qualifiers to help them advance to the final. in June, and is a national hero. in Spain after helping them win two European Championships and the World Cup in 2010.
The 20-year-old Manchester City defender Eric Garcia – who are due to join Barcelona next season – was chosen before Ramos, although he has only started one game all season for the English champions, who also have another defender, Aymeric Laporte included in the team, after turning their backs on the France team in favor of Spain.
The astonishing fact about this Spanish team is that for the first time in history there is not a single Real Madrid player.
Luis Enrique said of Ramos: “It was a very difficult decision but Ramos hasn’t been able to compete or train very recently. I would have liked Ramos to be part of the team but I didn’t think it was viable because he hardly was able to compete ”.
Visibly disappointed with the news, Ramos tweeted: “After a few tough months and a strange season, unlike anything I’ve experienced in my career, come the Euros. I fought and worked every day, body and soul, to be able to reach 100% for Real Madrid and the national team, but things don’t always go the way we would like ”.
Adding: “It pains me not to have been able to help my team more and not to play for Spain but in this case the best thing to do is to rest, to fully recover and to come back next year as we always have. It hurts not to represent your country, but I have to be honest and sincere ”.
