IIt’s been a while since Hollywood’s biggest night has had a host. The Oscars have been without an MC since Kevin Hart left under a cloud ahead of the 2019 awards, but this year they’re shaking things up. The Academy confirmed earlier this week that this year’s show will indeed have a host, but has yet to give any indication of who that might be.
Naturally, this development caused a stir in Los Angeles, sparking feverish speculation that the Academy only encouraged. On Wednesday, they teased on Twitter: “Hypothetically, if we asked you who would you like to host the Oscars, and this is strictly hypothetical, who would it be hypothetically?” Popular suggestions included the better things actor Diedrich Bader, an idea submitted by better things actor Diedrich Bader.
While we can only applaud Bader’s nerve, the status of his job application sadly remains unknown. In the meantime, the rumor continued to swirl. Here’s our rundown of who is most likely to be offered the gig:

Which: ABC’s Late Night Talk Show Host Jimmy Kimmel Live!, as well as host of the Oscars themselves in 2017 and 2018.
Advantages: A safe pair of hands – more Jimmy Kimmel Live! is filmed right across from the Oscars, so it won’t have much to do.
The inconvenients: If the intention is to freshen up the show, bringing Kimmel back would feel like stepping back in time.

Tiffany Haddish

Which: A wickedly outrageous stand-up and bona fide movie star in comedies like Girls’ trip, evening school and Like a boss. It just so happens that this year’s Oscars broadcast is prepared by Girls trip producer Will Packer, fueling speculation that she will be one of the first.
Advantages: Stand-ups tend to do better as hosts, but they need acting credibility. too much. Haddish ticks both boxes. Most importantly, she’s wildly funny and effortlessly charismatic – exactly the kind of talent you need in this often thankless role.
The inconvenients: Arguably too much funny for the Oscars?

Which: The current Mr. Kim Kardashian is among the most desirable men on the planet – and the Academy seems to think so, too. american tabloid Page 6 reported that the folks at Davidson had “discussions” with the Oscars about hosting this year’s ceremony. (A later report by Variety called it “highly unlikely” that Davidson would land the job.)

Advantages: The rising star of the current Saturday Night Live harvest would bring an edgy sensibility to the often stifling price discount.
The inconvenients: Will Hollywood’s A-list take pictures of her acting skills from the star of The King of Staten Island?

Tom Holland
Could Holland host the Oscars?
(Getty Images)
Which: Spider-Man himself, or to give him his full name: Mr Zendaya.
Advantages: He’s likeable, young, and a literal Marvel superhero, not to mention half of an adorable, nearly impossible power couple in Hollywood. The Academy reportedly contacted Holland after he commented in an interview, “What kind of idiot wouldn’t host the Oscars?” Obviously, he didn’t follow the Kevin Hart saga.
The inconvenients: At just 25, could Holland lack the gravity to hold court over the night’s assortment of A-listers and self-absorbed?

James Cordon
Oscars 2020: James Corden and Rebel Wilson present the prize disguised as Cats actors
Which: Grown-up theater kid and CBS host’ The Late Late Show with James Corden.
Advantages: Lots of hosting experience, and likely to design and deliver a spectacular, even self-enhancing song and dance routine.
The inconvenients: Many Academy members still haven’t forgiven him for a) wearing a ridiculous cat costume alongside Rebel Wilson at the 2020 Visual Effects Oscar presentation b) appearing in Cats in the first place.

Steve Martin and Martin Short
(Getty Images for Turner)
Which: Comedy legends who met on the set of the 1985s Three Amigos! and have remained friends ever since, recently scoring a hit with a mystery series Only murders in the building.
Advantages: The pair are a literal double act of comedy (don’t miss their brilliant two-man show An evening you will forget for the rest of your life on Netflix) and they already have strong support. Judd Apatow lobbied for them on Twitter: “It would be pure happiness and we need it.”
The inconvenients: Martin has already hosted the Oscars three times, so maybe he’s not the new face the Academy is looking for.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Say There’s a Lack of Diversity in Hollywood’s Foreign Press
Which: Like Martin and Short, Fey and Poehler are comedy icons with an actual friendship that shows when they host, like they did for the Golden Globes between 2013 and 2015.
Advantages: Hilarious, and would have a lot of fun piercing the serious air that can often top the Oscars.
The inconvenients: If you’re trying to make your awards show fun, fresh, and exciting, you probably don’t want to hire someone associated with the Golden Globes.
Host score with the most: 4/5
James Franco and Anne Hathaway
Which: Actors who had never worked together before before co-hosting the 2011 awards show, now widely dubbed “the worst Oscars ever.”
